US 101 Bike/PED Crossing Study

Rohnert Park, California

The US 101 freeway is a major barrier to east-west travel in central Rohnert Park, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians. The existing undercrossings at Commerce Boulevard and Golf Course Drive, as well as the overcrossing at Rohnert Park Expressway, do allow for travel between the east and west sides. However, these crossings, while functional, present safety concerns by requiring cyclists and pedestrians to navigate across freeway on and off ramps and through large intersections.

To improve bicycle and pedestrian safety and circulation, SGA developed a Feasibility Study of a new bicycle and pedestrian crossing of US 101. The study evaluated seven potential crossing locations, multiple alignments for both undercrossings and overcrossings of US 101, and made design recommendations. SGA also conducted a supplemental hydraulic assessment of Copeland Creek to determine whether the existing culvert under US 101 could be expanded for bike/ped use, while simultaneously offering additional hydraulic capacity to alleviate existing flooding conditions on the upstream side of US 101.

A new bike/ped crossing would provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safer alternative for crossing US 101 in the vicinity of transit, businesses, and offices, compared to the existing crossing options, and provide a continuous ADA-compliant Class I path to improve east-west connectivity and close gaps in the City’s existing active transportation network.
